2016 Porsche Boxster Spyder 981 Manual MY16
Description
A refreshing reminder of what truly brilliant driver’s cars really feel like, the Type 981 Boxster Spyder references Porsche’s 1950’s minimalist masterpiece, the 550 Spyder.
This smile inducing street machine is all about lightness, precision handling and brilliantly linear power delivery.
In their 2015 review TopGear revelled: "The Boxster Spyder is, by all the measures that matter most, magnificent".
Using the 3.8 litre direct injection six-cylinder from the 911 Carrera S producing 370hp at 6,700rpm (45 more than the Boxster GTS) this hair-raising giant killer can accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 4.5 seconds with a booming soundtrack to match.
The swooping rear lid is made of aluminium, the hood has an unheated polymer rear window, the seats are carbon-shelled buckets, Sport Chrono package is standard, it has dynamic engine and transmission mounts for extra stability, there’s a mechanical locking diff and torque-vectoring, the fully electric steering is borrowed from the range topping 911 Turbo, you open the doors using old-skool fabric straps and the Spyder top saves 11kg’s in weight whilst keeping the centre of gravity nice and low too.
Why don’t all cars feel this good?
The optional Spyder Classic interior package means that the legends live on in the new Boxster Spyder. The predominant feature in the interior is Garnet Red leather – based on the color that caused a stir in the historic Spyder models – and then contrasting with that, black Alcantara® like in motorsport. Trim strips painted in GT Silver Metallic counter the impressive combination of The Spyder Classic interior package pays homage to the legendary Spyder models: back in 1958, in its second year, the 718 RSK Spyder took third and fourth place in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and won the European Hill Climb Championship. In 1959 there followed victory in the Targa Florio. A huge amount of power despite the small cubic capacity and only four cylinders. Another member of this famous series is the 718 RS 60 Spyder which Porsche put on the racetrack in 1960. Together they dominated the Hill Climb Championships for years.
